Why is Lily Potter a witch, but Petunia is not in Harry Potter?

Aren't siblings usually the same form of being? I didn't understand that part.

Why is Lily Potter a witch, but Petunia is not in Harry Potter?
Lily Potter (the mother of Harry Potter) is a muggle born witch, or mudblood. Lily's magical powers came about as somewhat of a genetic flaw. Her sister Petunia did not inherit this flaw, therefore she is like their parents, a muggle. Just like reality, siblings inherit different traits from their parents. Just because Lily is a witch doesn't mean Petunia has to be one too. Hermione Granger is the same as Lily, her parents are muggles, but she is a witch.

Reply:petunia isn't a witch because she skipped a gene
Reply:Her parents had the recessive genes for being magical and they both gave one to Lily, so she was a witch. She was just lucky (I'm just guessing that you know how genes and junk work). 0.0
Reply:Petunia got skipped when getting the magic gene.
Reply:No, that's not necessary true. Even in a magical family one of the kids can be a squib.
Reply:the wizards and witches from the school saw the potential Lily had to be a witch. why can you understand Hermione being a witch and not Petunia?
