Lily was spayed 4 days ago.....she's licked away all but 1 suture. Incision is good. Is this serious?

Yes it is! You should have gotten her back to the vets ASAP!

I strongly suggest you do so as soon as you can! This time get her a cone for her head so she cant get at the stitches. They may have to resuture her up! This is very dangerous!

It usually takes more than 4 days for a cut like that to heal. As long as you keep her calm and quiet (no running, jumping, etc.) it shouldn't be a problem. If she still licks and chews at it, or if you can't keep her quiet 24/7 or if the wound opens, then take her back to the vet immediately.
Reply:The stitches should stay in for at least 10 days! I'd get her back to the Vet, and they should give her a plastic thingy that goes around the head to avoid dogs licking.... your Vet will know what I mean! A dog's saliva does have some antiseptic properties I believe, but there is a risk of infection none the less, and also the chance the wound site will open right up!
Reply:Is she wearing her ecollar? My 1 year old female poodle got spayed on 04/30/08 and she is back to normal, no licking herself, i did just take off her ecollar. My dog got absorable sutures so I do not need to take her to remove the stiches...

Best of luck, but call your vet that would be your best bet!
Reply:Ugh.... the sutures should stay in for more than 4 days. Call your vet in the morning, they'll surely want to take a look at her. Why did you let her lick it so much? My dog got neutered 6 days ago and every suture is still intact.
Reply:Agreed- call the vet first thing in the morning. Although the incision may look fine now, it's probably just healed on the surface and you DO NOT want that popping open! Keep her still in her kennel until morning!
Reply:a wound takes a good 14 days to heal properly. she needs to see the vet again asap because its very likeyl now that she could open up the wound.
Reply:YES! Call the vet NOW!!!
Reply:Yes take her in ASAP she should have worn a collar for the 10 days before the sutures come out......
