Can i cut down my lily of the valleys after they bloom?

some people cut them back %26amp; then wonder why they are so small the following year. the leaves feed the bulbs all summer to prepare them for their winter sleep. I don't cut back the leaves on any of my bulb plants %26amp; the following year they are always bigger %26amp; better than the previous year

if you cut down your lily of the valley after they bloom they won't have the chance to re-seed. if you look closely after they bloom you will see that it will get something that looks like little green balls, these are the seeds, I think this the re-seeding stage.

Reply:Well certainly. However if you want them back and better next year it is best to wait until the foilage starts to brown as that is how next years crop gets its food, etc....
Reply:Cut back the flower stalks but leave the leaves alone. Cutting back faded flowers can sometimes induce a second flush of flowers, but the plants need the leaves: during the summer they will photosynthesise and produce sugars which will build up the root and give a bigger plant next year.
