There probably ARE four plants growing together. Your plant is easy to divide. Just be gentle. I've grown these in water and soil. If you're growing your lily in soil, you'll have the best luck if the plant is watered thoroughly before you divide it. Cover your work area with lots of newspapers, lay the plant on its side and gently slide it out of the pot. Just by using your fingers you can pry the plant into two divisions...probably four if your plant is as big as you say. The roots will be twined around each other, but don't worry about a few breaking. Just keep gently wiggling them apart. Trim off any brown leaves, etc. and repot in four fresh pots. I use peat humus mixed with ordinary potting soil. Water them thoroughly and let them drain. Don't put them back in direct sun for a few days until they've recovered. Peace!
Reply:If you gently unpot it and just pull it apart, making sure you have roots with all the starts, you should be able to repot the new stats without much trouble. Water it in well and it should be fine.
Reply:I had a peace lily (three or four in one pot) that I'd had for five years -- it needed to be separated like yours. The roots were quite intertwined. I did so successfully I thought but then over time (a few weeks) they all died.... Next time I'll plan on just transplanting to a much larger pot rather than separating.
Reply:Push two hand forks into the plant back to back and gently lever the forks against each other to split the plant apart. Re pot and water well
