Why did Voldemort give Lily a choice as to whether or not she lived?

When Voldemort went to kill Harry?

Why did Voldemort give Lily a choice as to whether or not she lived?
Basically Voldemort said Lily could live and join him and the Death Eaters or die with her son. Voldemort wanted her to join him, she was strong and smart. I also think she had information, like she was an Unspeakable at the Ministry, but that is just a theory.
Reply:Any wizard he thought was strong enough was given a chance to join him. Apparently he thought Lily would be a good addition to his minions.
Reply:so he could get the baby (harry) without any trouble, but she didnt want to save herself so thats where the whole "love" protection situation comes up and thats why harry didnt die, because his mother protected him with her love.....
Reply:I dont think JKs really said yet. I think it will be one of the secrets we find out in book 7.

to Lauren:

He did tell Lily that she "Need not die to move away from Harry."

Im pretty sure that means giving her a choice.
Reply:Umm... Voldemort didn't give Lily a chance as to whether or not she lived; he killed her immeadeatly, then tried to kill Harry, but found the task somehow impossible.
Reply:Hey Lou.

On that night, only 2 people were ment to die. James and Harry Potter. I don't know if this is confirmed as true but James is supposidly a decendent of Gryffendor, tie that into that whole Horocrux bit, and you got a reason on why to slaughter the only two remanders of Gryffendor. Lily, was not a decendent, obviously. So, basically she was usless. The plan was to just kill her husband and son, then either Voldy would keep her with him, or just have her suffer for the rest of her life without James and Harry, that would be worse than death.

He gave her a choice because she was not ment to die that night. If she refused to move, he could just kill her and then her son. But if she just gave up, he would kill both, and she would live the rest of her life alone. That was the plan.

Lou, would you rather be killed? Or would you rather live your life suffering, think about that and get back to me.
Reply:Maybe he thought she wouldn't try to protect Harry if he spared her life or maybe it was because she was muggle born.
